The Urogynaecology dept. at the Mater Hospital and the Townsville Hospital collaborate actively with JCU and has been responsible for ground breaking trials in the world.  Some of them include the ‘Suspend Trial’ which included trials on different types of sub-urethral tapes to see how they perform, the ‘TORP Trial’ comparing the Transobturator vs. Retropubic sling approach, the ‘PWR Trial’ which looked at various repairs of the back wall of the vagina to see which is best and the ‘Monarc Trial’ which involved performing the Monarc sub-urethral sling for the first time in Australia at the Townsville Hospital.

Professor Rane has performed the TVTO, the Monarc, the Perigee and the Apogee in Australia and he was the first surgeon to bring these operations to this country.

We are also currently conducting research comparing the western toilet to the squat toilet to look at its effects on the bladder and bowel function.  We also use the 3D ultrasound scan to identify and follow up patients after pelvic reconstructive surgery.
